DESIGN IN CONTEXT
History & Architecture Focus
Los Angeles tells its story in public: through a movie palace’s dramatic entrance, a boulevard shaped by music and nightlife, a studio gateway, a market clock tower or a pier stretching into the Pacific.
Our city route connects Hollywood, the Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Museum Row. Along the way, we look at how entertainment, design, commerce and everyday neighborhood life have shaped the places people think they already know.
Saturday’s final tour adds a coastal chapter toward Santa Monica, with Venice as time and traffic allow. This coastal extension is SOLD OUT! Unless specifically notified otherwise, Saturday guests are on the Hollywood–Beverly Hills loop.
THE FAMILY BEHIND THE COFFEE
From Family Tradition to Your LA Adventure
Don Francisco’s Coffee comes from the Gaviña family, whose coffee story spans four generations and reaches from Cuba to Southern California. The family established its Los Angeles coffee business in 1967 and launched Don Francisco’s Coffee in 1984. It’s a story of family, craft, and a lasting connection to the city we call home.

Who was Don Francisco?
Francisco Gaviña was the coffee-loving patriarch whose name inspired Don Francisco’s Coffee. His family’s coffee story began in Cuba in 1870 and continued in Southern California, where the Gaviñas built a new chapter of their family business.
What is Don Francisco’s connection to Los Angeles?
The Gaviña family established F. Gaviña & Sons in Los Angeles in 1967 and introduced Don Francisco’s Coffee in 1984. The company’s roasting home in Vernon is part of the region’s long food-and-manufacturing story.
Is Don Francisco’s still a family business?
Yes. Don Francisco’s describes itself as family owned and family crafted, with coffee knowledge passed through four generations. The archive gallery above offers a closer look at the people behind that tradition.
Where can I explore the coffees?
Visit donfranciscos.com to explore the brand’s coffees and family story. Our product feature below showcases Daybreak Blend and Moonlight Roast; the specific coffees served at the event may differ.
Do we go inside the landmarks?
The route highlights places along the sightseeing itinerary. Admission or interior access to museums, theaters, studios and other attractions is not included unless separately announced.
Can I register or add another guest?
No. Registration is closed for all October 3 departures, and no additional tickets will be released. Join the newsletter above for updates on future tours. Newsletter signup does not reserve a seat or join a waitlist.
Where should I park?
Look for paid garages, lots or metered street parking around the Hollywood boarding point. Check posted rates, time limits and restrictions. Parking is not included.
Who can help with accessibility or other questions?
Email Info@laexplained.com before reserving if you have an accessibility question or need help with event details. We can confirm the arrangements for this particular bus experience.
